Sydney-born Tony Schwensen's art examines the human condition. Paralleling political correctness and everyday experiences with artistic and cultural orthodoxies, Schwensen’s interdisciplinary art practice examines the underside of both Australian cultural life, and artistic values and economies.
Tony Schwensen / Artist biography
Exhibiting since 1988, Schwensen’s practice has always been dependent upon utilising the medium most appropriate for the concept, be it painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, video or performance. Schwensen is completing a PhD at the Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney and teaches Performance at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Recent and forthcoming projects include Biennale of Sydney, 2008, Plowing Back, Liverpool Regional Museum, Liverpool, 2007, and Inport IV – International Video-Performance Art Festival, Tallin, Estonia, 2006. In 2008 he will present the solo shows: Legacy , Trace Installation Artspace, Cardiff, Wales , Raw Power Studio, Uplands Gallery, Melbourne and Boys/Buoys/Beuys, Sarah Cottier Gallery, Sydney. As the recipient of the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship he undertook a residency at Stichting BAD in Rotterdam. Schwensen has also completed residencies in Tokyo and Paris.
