A graduate of The Australian Ballet School, David McAllister first joined The Australian Ballet in 1983, becoming a Principal Artist in 1989. McAllister has performed with companies including the Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada and Singapore Dance Theatre. In 2000 McAllister completed a Graduate Diploma in Arts and Entertainment Management. He became Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet in July 2001. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2004.

Each year, The Australian Ballet presents approximately 200 performances nationally and internationally. The company perform works from the classical repertoire, and more contemporary works and commissions that explore the development and future of this dynamic artform. In 2007 The Australian Ballet undertook its 30th international tour with a visit to Japan, following 2006 tours to China and New Zealand. Following the 2005 UK Swan Lake tour the company was awarded the 'Best Foreign Dance Company' prize at the UK Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards. In 2008 The Australian Ballet heads to Europe.
