The densely patterned surfaces of familiar images, drawn from recent trips to India or Australia are suggestive of the 'global, transcultural nature of myths'. Bird’s use of words, collage and found objects fits with the idea of artist as 'obsessive ethnographer and obsessive collector of data'.
Stephen Bird / Artist biography
For international artist, Stephen Bird, the vigorous hybridism of his work is drawn from many cultures. An Australian citizen, he was brought up in the Potteries district of England, near Stoke on Trent and studied Fine art at Duncan and Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. His collaged ceramic platters and figures combine ready made and modeled elements to create highly complex compositions rich in imagery and reference to domestic, social and political life.
