Nicholas Jose has written widely on contemporary Asian and Australian culture and worked in China from 1986-1990. He was President, Sydney PEN, from 2002-2005 and currently holds the chair of Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide. Jose is also general editor of the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature which is due for publication in 2009.

Jose’s most recent book is a novel, Original Face, published in 2005. Black Sheep: Journey to Borroloola a memoir, appeared in 2002. Other books include the novels The Red Thread, The Custodians, The Rose Crossing, Avenue of Eternal Peace, Paper Nautilus and Rowena’s Field, two collections of short stories, The Possession of Amber, Feathers or Lead and Chinese Whispers, Cultural Essays published in 1995. Jose also co-translated The Finish Line by Sang Ye and The Ape Herd by Mang Ke (included in Poems for the Millennium). His play Dead City was performed in 1994.
