Born and raised in regional New South Wales, John Tranter is considered one of Australia’s most pre-eminent and prolific poets. He has worked mainly in publishing, editing, teaching and radio production. He has published, or been included in, over 20 books and is currently the editor of Australian literary e-zine Jacket.

John Tranter is an internationally renowned poet. One of his latest publications, Urban Myths: 210 Poems, won a number of awards, including the Victorian state award for poetry in 2006 and the 2008 South Australian Premier’s Prize for the best overall book. His many volumes of poetry include Under Berlin, which won the Grace Leven Prize. He co-edited The Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry with Philip Mead, now the standard text in its field. Tranter has travelled widely, making reading tours of the USA, England and Europe.
