Indonesian-born artist Dadang Christanto addresses issues of social justice and has a strong empathy for those who are victims of systematic violence and brutality. Christanto's work challenges the enforced silence of all those who have been victimised throughout the 20th century.
Dadang Christanto / Artist biography
Christanto is well known for his large-scale works on paper with drawn, painterly and calligraphic marks in ink, however performance, installation, sculpture and video cover the range of Dadang’s art practice. Christanto has recently been selected as a participating artist at the 2008 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art.

Christanto's installations include They Give Evidence (1996-97); Cannibalism: The Memory of Jakarta - Solo 13, 14, 15 May 1998 (1998); and Red Rain (2000). His artwork, Heads from the North, has been permanently installed at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Christanto exhibits widely in Australia and has shown in Indonesia, Japan and Europe and has participated in the Venice, Yogyakarta and CP Open Biennials, and the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. He has been a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and an Australia Council New Work grant.
