Formed in 1987 and based in the regional centre of Geelong, Victoria, Back to Back Theatre creates theatre with people who are perceived to have an intellectual disability. It is one of Australia’s leading creative voices, focusing on moral, philosophical and political questions about the value of individual lives.

Back to Back Theatre’s works have premiered to critical and audience acclaim: small metal objects (2005) won the inaugural Age Critics’ Special Commendation, and has toured to 29 cities around the world including Europe, the UK and USA in 2009. It was awarded the Zürcher Theaterspektakel’s 2007 ZKB Acknowledgement Prize for extraordinary artistic achievement and a prestigious ‘Bessie’ Award for innovative achievement for its 2008 season at New York’s Under the Radar festival. Back to Back Theatre’s newest work, Food Court, sold out six weeks prior to opening and has since toured to GPAC, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels and the Sydney Opera House.
